Town of Edgartown is hiring for the position of Shellfish Constable/Herring Warden. The Shellfish Constable provides professional technical, supervisory, and administrative work in managing the Shellfish Department. They actively oversee the protection and expansion of the local shellfish population, the enforcement of applicable laws and regulations, and the maintenance of facilities related to shellfish. This is a 40 hour benefitted position working under the guidance and advice of a five member Shellfish Committee.
The Shellfish Constable accurately maintains scientific records and monitors populations for disease in conjunction with other agencies. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to staff oversight, budget preparation and other management functions. The incumbent will participate in the development of rules and regulations relating to aquaculture, shellfish propagation and transplantation programs, oversees predator control programs and collaborates on all projects meant to enhance natural stocks and maintain ecological balances.
The individual works closely with the public providing frequent explanations and interpretations of rules and practices; they must be familiar with state and local laws and the regulations of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.
Candidates must possess good interpersonal, organizational and time management skills, must have very good verbal and written communication abilities and strong professional integrity. The successful candidate will have a High School Diploma/ GED and four years shellfish experience; Bachelor's Degree in Biology preferred or any equivalent combination of education and experience. A Shellfish Constable Course Certification will be required. Salary commensurate with experience.
